Where Data Meets F1

Hey there! It’s great to have you here. My name is Ekagra Gupta, Founder of ProjectF1. I started this publication 2 years ago because I believe I could use data insights to enrich the storytelling of Formula 1 and positively impact the experience of we – the fans. Here’s how I’ve been doing it.

Formula 1 is a dramatic and exciting sport. Yet despite its highly technical nature, a lot of the discussion is lost in the conjecture. Not all racing is done on track. Keeping the data on the sidelines means that we don’t receive the maximum F1 experience.

This is when I started the journey of bringing F1 and data; back together again. By collecting, visualising and analysing data over the race weekend, I am able to showcase the trade-offs in car design, performance and strategy in a new light.

Data Helps Us Understand

  • Qualifying

A deep dive into one-lap pace. Learn where the car and driver have the edge over the competition.

Leclerc vs Sainz at the 2021 US GP Qualifying
  • Race Pace

Analysis of the car over a full Grand Prix distance. How does performance vary between tyres and stint length?

Verstappen vs Hamilton Race Pace - Brazil 2021
  • Strategy

Assess whether it was the right strategy. How powerful is the under/overcut? Did it change the outcome?

Bottas Undercuts Perez - Brazil 2021

I deliver insights across these areas and more in short form via graphics and blurbs. These helped interpret the momentum shift from Mercedes to Red Bull from FP1 to qualifying at the 2021 US Grand Prix. I follow up this content with regular in-depth race reports that deep dive into why the race unfolded as it did. This helps tell the story of how Verstappen was able to hold off Hamilton in the closing laps to take victory around the Circuit of the Americas.

ProjectF1 aims to help fans understand the ‘why’ to racing.
